Postgrados: ¿Una ventaja laboral o un costoso e inútil cartón?
 Si a la enseñanza básica se le suman los cuatro años de enseñanza media y los cinco años que en promedio dura una carrera universitaria, pasamos más de 15 años frente a libros, dando exámenes y participando en graduaciones. Pero como si este tiempo fuera poco, algunos han hecho o están pensando perfeccionarse a través de un diplomado, máster o doctorado. Las cifras así lo indican. Según la encuesta de Laborum a 580 personas, un 64% al menos lo ha considerado, informándose en su mayoría a través de las mismas web de las universidades. Las motivaciones…variadas. Saber más, tener mejor sueldo, ser más valorados en el trabajo, ante la cesantía ocupar mejor el tiempo o simplemente buscar mejores opciones para trabajar en lo que siempre han querido. Ese es el caso de María Ignacia Alvear, quien recién egresada de periodismo decidió tomar sus maletas y volar a Inglaterra para estudiar Máster of Arts In International Studies, con mención en International Political Economy en la University of Birmingham. Junto con la preocupación de que Inglaterra es uno de los países más caros de Europa, los $10 millones que en ese entonces (2007) costaba el máster eran un problema no menor. Afortunadamente y gracias a la beca de la universidad Ignacia sólo pagó el 50% del costo, mientras que el resto y los gastos de estadía fueron financiados a través de un crédito CORFO. En Chile y ya con el cartón en la mano pensó que todo sería más fácil y que al fin dejaría atrás los trabajos de medio tiempo mal pagados. “Cuando volví, creí que iba ya a tener pega para empezar a pagar mi crédito, pero no fue así”, y advierte que en el caso de los periodistas a veces los postgrados son negativos porque los empleadores asumen que es un trabajador más caro. A su regreso la decepción fue total. Ante la pregunta que si el máster la ayudó a encontrar un mejor trabajo la respuesta fue rápida: no. “Mi idea era hacer el postgrado pero para trabajar en algo relacionado a lo que estudié, Relaciones Internacionales, pero igual es difícil encontrar una pega relacionada a eso. Por ejemplo, yo siempre postulé a trabajos en la CEPAL que fueran como de asistente de investigación o incluso de periodista y asistente de comunicaciones, pero pedían como 5 años de experiencia mínimo. ¡Imposible!”, asegura. Luego de meses, Ignacia entró a trabajar en un medio escrito, pero sabe que fue más por la premura de encontrar a alguien que dominara muy bien el inglés que por sus estudios. Está segura que a sus jefes “les importa bien poco” que tenga un máster y que su considerable y reciente aumento de sueldo sólo se debe a su amenaza de renuncia. Cifra que igualmente dice no es un sueldo de máster. Un plus profesional Pese a que cursar un postrado ha adquirido más y más interés entre las personas, la encuesta de Laborum indica que quienes no han considerado la realización de un postgrado se debe en un 58% a la imposibilidad de financiarlo. Mientras que ente los que sí ya han realizado uno, los magister son los más populares con un 51%, seguidos por los diplomados con un 37%. Sin embargo, la situación de María Ignacia no parece muy lejana a la sensación que tiene el resto de los ex estudiantes. Según la misma encuesta el 27% de los encuestados asegura que en su trabajo la valoración de sus estudios es regular, otorgándole una nota 4 de 1(nada) a 6 (bastante), mientras que nada se lleva el 15% y bastante sólo el 13%.
