 Los ánimos entre el Colegio de Profesores y el Ministerio de Educación siguen siendo tensos. Las discusiones por las condiciones laborales y remuneraciones de los docentes de nuestro país aún causan polémica y, ciertamente, la percepción no es menor: según estudios realizados por el Centro de Investigación Avanzada en Educación (CIAE) de la Universidad de Chile, el 84,2 por ciento cree que los profesores de básica tienen un status social medio o bajo y, un 79,4, piensa lo mismo de los que ejercen en la enseñanza media. Este estudio realizado en 2009, en donde participaron dos mil docentes chilenos, de todas las regiones, demostró que los encuestados califican su profesión como una de las menos prestigiosas del país y, además,la que posee menor retribución. Las diferencias con otras percepciones son evidentes: sólo un 5,6 por ciento ven su carrera con un status medio o bajo; abogados, un 14, 6 e ingenieros comerciales un 27,1. Y las evidencias no son menores: pese a que los docentes de nuestro país han incrementado considerablemente su sueldo, en las últimas dos décadas, aún ganan un 45 por ciento menos que el resto de los profesionales chilenos. Además, el incremento de los salarios sostuvo un fuerte estancamiento a partir del 2000. Juan Pablo Valenzuela, investigador del Núcleo Milenio sobre profesión docente de la U. de Chile, explicó a “El Mercurio”, que los docentes de nuestro país se sienten así, principalmente, por tres razones: “se consideran poco respetados por el Gobierno y el propio Colegio de Profesores, sus sueldos son significativamente más bajos que los de los demás profesionales y tienen poco tiempo para planificar o preparar sus clases" Otro de los datos llamativos de dicha encuesta tiene que ver con el género. Las brechas de ingresos entre hombres y mujeres son mucho menores que las que se dan en otras profesiones. Esta situación, según Valencia, es efectiva por la gran cantidad de regulaciones existentes en el código laboral del profesorado chileno. Otro factor que podría tener incidencia en el poco prestigio que está teniendo la carrera docente es que, además de que los sueldos por horas de los docentes son más bajos, estos trabajan menos horas que el resto. Según el experto de la Universidad de Chile, esta situación no es porque los profesores quieran trabajar menos, sino porque la estructuración de los horarios es bastante incómoda. “En algunos colegios a veces los contratan para hacer tres clases al día y los lapsos entre ellas no les permiten ir a otro colegio”. En base a esta situación, el Gobierno, en conjunto con el Ministerio de Educación, se encuentra trabajando en la mejora del prestigio de la carrera docente, en donde, entre otras medidas, destaca el incentivo a los estudiantes chilenos para optar por la Pedagogía, entregando, por ejemplo, una beca del cien por ciento a los jóvenes que obtengan arriba de 600 puntos y desean ser docentes.
